Summer Solstice Slam 2009 Winners

The second annual Summer Solstice Slam disc golf tournament ended with Gregg taking 1st place and Preston receiving the much coveted DFL trophy. Two rounds were planned for Toney's Mountain Golf, and a round for Penn Valley's Hanging Oak disc golf course.

The first round at Toney's took 5 hours to complete. And since most of the combatants were too terrifed to enter the "bowl" a second time we cut the second round from the competition. David was in the lead after the first round. Gregg made up a 3 stroke deficit ( and then some) by shooting 1 under par at Penn Valley. He took the trophy and led by 5 strokes at the end of play.

Preston, whose score shall not be named, took the DFL trophy. In the end he played the most disc golf of anyone, and may be in need of a new throwing arm as this is written.
Bidwell Junior High - Blast
Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD)
Chico Country Day School
75 golf discs were donated in May to three local youth organizations (2 schools and the recreation district) by the Outsiders and the Golden Valley Bank Community Foundation (photos of the discs and recipients above).

The discs were purchased from the Disc Golf Association at a discount, and were a combination of putters and drivers. 25 were donated to the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD), 25 to Bidwell Junior High's Blast program, and 25 to Chico Country Day School (elementary school).

Donating these discs is an inexpensive way to introduce young people to disc golf, and make it easier for these groups to involve more kids in the recreation. The discs will remain with the programs and used by different kids each year. Both schools already had homemade disc golf targets, and CARD holds Camp Chi-Da-Ca every year which is adjacent to the Sherwood Forest disc golf course.

We are still looking for donations to help continue this program. Please consider donating any amount to support disc golf, a lifelong recreation, being taught to our kids (see donation link above to make a donation).

June 2009 - Night Hike A Success

The Outsiders led a night hike from Hooker Oak Recreation Area to the Kiwanis Chico Community Observatory as part of CARD's Community Campout. Todd, Gregg, Becket, Nicole, Jennifer, and Lon led the hikers.

About 100 people made the hike, and Saturn in all its glory was available for viewing (including it's rings and moons).

Thanks go out to Anita and Kris who managed to accomodate the mass influx of people at the observatory. Special thanks also goes out the Ann at CARD for putting together another fun campout.
Sunset Hills Golf Course adds disc golf targets
This small ball golf course added baskets in September 2008. This is a pay course with a 9 hole round costing $5 and an 18 hole round $8. Disc rental and lessons are also availible. The hole lengths are 250' shortest hole, two 400', and one 550' and the rest about 320'.

For directions see this map link or contact Les Harrison.

10AM tee-time Lava Creek Golf Course - Players meeting at 9:30AM

Come play disc golf amongst the rolling hills and towering oaks of Lava Creek in Paradise (about 20 minutes from Chico). This 18-hole disc golf course comes complete with water hazards and dramatic elevation changes. The Chico Outsiders will pay the greens fee for the first 60 disc golfers that register. Play a round of disc golf on one of the most scenic courses in Northern California. There will be a disc raffle and the tournament winner will earn an annual membership in the Chico Outsiders.

Lava Creek is a traditional ball golf course. Disc golfers need to practice appropriate behaviour when playing there. Keep the noise down. Players must wear shirts and shoes at all times. Outside alcoholic beverages are prohibited. However, beer, other beverages, and snacks may be purchased from the shop at Lava Creek. Here's a map to the Lave Creek course.
